At Springfield Southeast High School , the red carpet was literally rolled out… but not before a little bit of student mischief. During AP class, students pulled off the ultimate prank,walking out one by one, leaving Mr. Matt Maton wondering what was going on—only to lead him into a packed commons filled with cheering students and staff.

The big reveal? Mr. Maton is the 2026 Horace Mann Educator of the Year!

With 31 years in the classroom, Mr. Maton has built a legacy rooted in passion, connection, and making history come alive. Visibly surprised, he shared how much he loves teaching history and helping students truly engage with and appreciate their learning. Safe to say,the feeling is mutual.

Across town at Springfield High School - Illinois, the entire school gathered inside the gymnasium for another unforgettable moment. When Dr. Lisa Leardi walked in, she was met with a wave of cheers, applause, and a room full of students, staff, friends, and her sons ready to celebrate her.

That’s when the announcement was made: Dr. Leardi is the 2026 Administrator of the Year!

Her reaction? Pure joy, and her signature phrase said it all: “It’s the best day ever!”

A leader who pours her heart into her school community, Dr. Leardi’s impact is felt far beyond the walls of SHS. She will receive $500 in recognition of this incredible honor.
